Whiners Win Again! Some background — Cryptic implements a death penalty and the much asked-for difficulty slider in STO (currently on the test shard). At some point in the past, STO's executive producer was quoted in an interview saying something to the effect of: death penalties are annoying, they should be optional. Well, as implemented on the test shard, they were not optional. And this caused an uproar of a small group of people. Much whining ensued. Many threadnaughts came into existence. People screamed and called Cryptic liars. But you know, it wasn't a lie. I really don't think the statement was made with the intention to deceive. They changed their minds, so what? If everything developers say publicly is suddenly set in stone, then any sane developer would just stop talking publicly. I mean really, MMOs are organic beasts — change happens. And yeah, from my tone, you can tell that I'm a bit disappointed that the death penalty is now optional. What's the point of a death penalty if it's not universally applicable? Though I do agree with some of the anti-DP crowd that this particular implementation would not have curbed the rampant zerg-fests — the main reason why I like death penalties. But what's the point of having it at all now? Anyway, I stopped playing STO for the past week, but not because there's anything wrong. I stopped playing because I got a taste of the difficulty slider and the death penalty on the test shard. I thought, "hey, this is f'n awesome!" and decided that I would not play again until it went live. It really was that game changing. Also, I was busy with the Crysis games... Anyhow, I bought a lifetime sub to STO so I could play a Cryptic game. Not a game designed-by-committee, designed-by-community. They really are caving in too easily. Oh well.
